Where you live: (Area) Gatley / Oxford
When was your first game? Brighton (home) March 1995. We won 3-1. Alun Armstrong scored two and Paul Ware scored I think, but I don’t remember much about the game apart from the atmosphere. It was my first ever live game and it was amazing. That was it for life after that – never looked back since.
How long have you supported county? Since my first game. So 10 years then.
Did you ever support Man u or Man c as a kid? I supported Man U cos all my mates did, but I never went to a game or owt. I obviously changed to County after my first game. That’s why I’m in favour of the free tickets for schools promotions, because if it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t be a County fan now.
How did you get into county? The Football in the Community people came into my school and did some coaching / fun and games etc etc. I think Tom Bennett was also there, though obviously I didn’t recognise him at the time. They gave us all free tickets for the Brighton game, and that was that…
Does anyone else in your family support county? Nobody else in my family likes football apart from me. I have cousins but they all support Man U or Liverpool.
Which team(s) do you look forward to the most? Ones we can beat :-P (so not many of them then!). Obviously the local derbies (though Macc didn’t work out too well this year…), and obviously the City games in the old days. In the absence of good football, I look out for teams in places with loads of traditional pubs, so you can make a day of it.
Which game(s) do you not look forward to? Ones where I think there might be trouble / a heavy police presence. Football is a very social thing for me – it’s more about seeing all my mates than the quality of the match – if I wanted to see amazing football I wouldn’t go and see County, put it that way. So when you get a game where there’s lots of trouble between fans and the police come in and move everyone and generally have to interfere in fighting etc, it’s sad cos it ruins the day. I just want to go to County to have a pint with all my mates and watch the game. When something gets in the way of that – whether that be other fans or the police – it’s sad.

Will you support us if we go into the conference? What sort of question is that?! I’ll always support County – even if we’re in the Unibond league I’ll still go – I might grumble and groan a bit, but I’ll still go. They’re my team – I have no choice in the matter. They chose me when I was a kid, and you can’t just desert them like that! When the owners weren’t interested last year, we didn’t just abandon hope, we got off our arses and took over the club! (www.stockportcountytrust.com by the way – quick plug!) That’s the attitude you have to have – always make the best of the situation, however dire it may seem.
Who will you support, if county do ever vanish? We will never vanish – that’s the one guarantee that comes with Trust ownership – that we will be around for as long as I’m alive at least. As long as we are owned by people who are running the club for the fans, and not themselves – ie. We are run by fans, elected by fans on behalf of fans for the fans – as long as we are in the hands of the Trust we are safe off the field. It’s just on the field that needs addressing…
Do you like the facilities at Edgeley Park? No. I hate being tenants in our own home. The sooner we buy back the ground and kick Sale out, the better.
What would you do to improve EP? Aside from kicking Sale out (not an option at the moment!), I’d like to see better quality food at cheaper prices. I’m quite happy to support the club by buying a burger at half time or whatever, but I do resent it when they cost like £3 and they’re totally manky. That would be a good start. Getting stewards to use a bit of common sense might also not be a bad idea.
Do you think that Sale should stay at EP? Much as I dislike them and all they stand for, I do think they should stay for now, while it suits us for them to do so. Given our crowds at present, we cannot justify (or afford!) to maintain a stadium as big and expensive (in terms of running costs) as ours on our own. Sale pay half of the costs to run the stadium, so until such a time when we are rolling in it and can afford to pay for everything ourselves, then yes, I think Sale staying is a good thing. I wish we were the owners and them the tenants though, as opposed to the other way round.
Do you buy programmes? No. There’s nothing wrong with them, but it’s added expense and added clutter in the house that I wouldn’t read.
How many away games do you attend? As many as I can – probably about 8 or so a season.
Are you a season ticket holder? If so, How long have you been one? No – there’s no point at the moment whilst I’m at University down south. When I graduate and get a full time job and can afford one, and can attend al the games, then I will buy one.
Which atmosphere do you prefer, Home or Away? Away, because everyone sings, whereas at home, a lot of people don’t sing.
Do you like the drum being in the Cheadle End? I do. I sit in Yellow Block (in the Popside) myself but I think the Drum adds a lot of atmosphere and is a focus for the singing. I just hope the new guy (is it Sheepchenko?)(Note, Reedy) does as good a job as Gaz did!
Do you think we'll get promoted in the next few seasons? Given our inability to go into debt, it is going to be a long, hard struggle. Quite rightly, we refuse to spend more than we can afford in pursuit of glory. The plight of clubs like Leeds, Bradford, Chesterfield, Macc Town, Hornchurch and Weymouth in recent years has told us the dangers of spending more than you can afford. If you look at our own club for a second, the last time we spend more than we could afford, we were very successful but it cost us the ground and nearly put us out of existence. I don’t want that for this club again. If we are ever to get back to the glory days, it must be on strong fiscal foundations, because if we do that, we’ll actually have a chance of building on our success and staying in the Championship, like Crewe have done. That’s why it’s so important to sort the money side of the club out now. What the Trust inherited was a mess, and it’ll take them two years to sort it. If we can just stay up this year, then I think we can build and the chance of us being in the Championship by the year 2009 is possible. If we go down to the Conference though, I think it will take us 5 or 6 years to get out of there. We’ll come back a stronger club, but it’ll just take longer. I don’t want us to even *think* about dropping out the Conference though – that would be too terrible to think about!
